Invisalign is a discrete solution to fix bite and alignment issues without the restrictions of brackets and wires. Clear aligners are worn over your teeth for at least 22 hours a day, applying gentle pressure to move them in small improvements. Some patients may require attachments to ensure the best results. Applying them is pain-free, but what about their removal? Here’s what you can expect when having your Invisalign attachments removed.
What are Invisalign Attachments?
Patients with moderate-to-advanced alignment issues may require attachments to move their teeth. Attachments give your aligners an anchor point to give them extra grip to help move your teeth into position. This can be beneficial for people with extreme overcrowding or gaps between teeth.
Attachments are made from a tooth-colored material, which is also used for fillings and composite bonding. Attachments are effective for certain types of tooth movements, like intrusions, extrusions, and rotations.
Your mouth might be sore for a few days after having your attachments bonded to your teeth. It isn’t caused by the application process. Instead, it’s from extra force being applied to your teeth. You can manage it with an OTC pain reliever and eating soft foods.
Removing Invisalign Attachments
Patients requiring attachments will often need them for the duration of their treatment. When it’s time for your attachments to come off, your orthodontist will use a special dental instrument to remove the composite material. The process is painless, so you don’t have to worry about any discomfort. Your orthodontist will polish your teeth after the material has been removed. The removal of attachments can take 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how many have been applied to your teeth.
Your attachments may also fall off on their own, such as while eating. Don’t worry. Your orthodontist can apply new attachments to ensure there are no delays in your journey to a straight smile.
Invisalign attachments will not harm or damage your teeth. If your orthodontist recommends adding attachments to your treatment plan, it’s best to follow their advice or you may face a longer timeline for Invisalign. Your orthodontist will create the personalized plan you need to achieve your best smile.
