You were going through your usual dental routine when, after picking up your removable retainer, you suddenly wondered whether you’ll have to replace it. Or maybe you were inspecting your teeth, caught sight of your fixed retainer, and realized that it might not last forever. Either way, it’s a valid sentiment. Retainers can become so ingrained in everyday life that it’s easy to forget they’re physical objects that can wear out over time!

Removable Vs. Fixed Retainers
Removable retainers look like mouthguards or clear aligner trays. Typically, they’re meant to be worn at night while you sleep and removed when you’re ready to start your day. There are many different types that contain different materials, but in general you can expect them to last around five to ten years.
Fixed retainers are designed to be more permanent. Your orthodontist will adhere a slim metal wire to the back or front of your teeth that’s more or less there to stay. They can retain your teeth’s alignment for several decades before they start to show signs of wear.
Signs Your Retainer is Ready for Retirement
Regardless of how old your retainer is, there are some signs that could indicate you need a replacement. Here’s what to watch out for:
- Small cracks, chips, dents, or bends
- A loose or bad fit
- White or yellowy deposits of calcium
Basically, when your retainer looks like it’s been through the ringer, that’s a pretty good sign it’s fulfilled its role and needs to be retired.
Taking Care of Your Retainer
If your retainer’s getting up there in age, you might not be surprised to discover it’s time for a replacement. On the other hand, if it’s only been one year or so and your inspection reveals it has expired prematurely, you might feel like raising an objection!
You should know that retainers, especially the fixed variety, are fairly durable. However, if you frequently exert excess pressure on them or neglect cleanings, they’ll wear out much sooner. To help ensure they last as long as possible, it’s best to follow these guidelines:
- Use cool or lukewarm water; hot water can warp removable retainer plastic
- Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Let removable retainers soak in an orthodontist-approved solution
- Clean them and your teeth regularly
- Don’t attempt to repair them yourself
- Secure removable retainers in a case when not in use
- Never eat or drink while wearing a removable retainer!
At the end of the day, following your orthodontist’s care instructions is the best way to secure your retainer’s longevity. Whether you need a replacement or have questions about maintenance, they should be the first person you call!
